In May, Cypriots welcome the return of spring and the beauty of nature with Anthestiria, the vibrant Flower Festival. Rooted in ancient traditions, this festival draws inspiration from the Athenian celebrations held in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. Anthestiria was also known as the “Carnival of Souls, Plants, and Flowers,” symbolizing the rebirth of both humanity and nature.
Today, Cyprus’ Anthestiria Festivals echo the spirit of their ancient counterpart. The name itself comes from the Greek word “anthos” (flower), reflecting the event’s floral splendor. Across the island, cities and villages come alive with flower exhibitions, markets, and shows, but the highlight remains the grand flower parade, where elaborately decorated floats and flower-bearing participants fill the streets with color.
In Pafos, the festivities center along the coastal avenue, stretching all the way to the old harbor of Kato Paphos.
