The AfroBanana Festival transforms and moves to the Nicosia Municipal Theatre

The AfroBanana Festival, a festival that has marked Cyprus’ cultural landscape for a decade, is changing, evolving, rebranding as Alternative Brains Rule Festival (ABR), and landing in the heart of Nicosia. At the center of this year’s events is the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, which will host the Festival on June 19, 20, and 21, 2025.

The ABR is not just a festival. It redefines the city as a living cultural platform and invites the public to days and nights full of music, art, and collective exploration.

Common Ground: Where art creates connections

ABR includes an art program consisting of interactive workshops and creative interventions in Nicosia Municipal Gardens, changing the way we perceive the world around us. This year’s program includes:

• Studio [lamarina] and Ferhat Yeşilada presenting “Umbra” — a multisensory walk along their new bridge, specially placed to connect the Municipal Theatre with the Garden.
• Visual Voices paying tribute to the Famagusta Orange Festival with the kinetic sculpture “Peacock Hand Juicer,” which visitors can activate to make fresh juice.
• The “Head and Hand” series by Kyriaki Costa, made of glass she retrieved from the nearby Pedieos river, through which she explores care, flow, and decay via handcrafted objects. And Maria Mitsi presenting “Windows to the Soul,” inspired by the architectural lines of Neoptolemos Michaelides, the visionary architect behind the redesign of the Gardens in the 1960s.

TRAPEZOMA – June 22, 2025 (Nicosia Municipal Garden)

Sunday, June 22, features a festive finale with free entry and the return of Trapezoma, with DJs playing from the top of the table, featuring selections from Synch founder Dimitri Papaioannou and Koulla P. Katsikoronou, Facets, and sixonesix. Meanwhile, the creative team from “To Patrikon” will serve a nostalgic menu with some of their most beloved dishes, from trahanokeftedes to kleftiko.

“1984-NOW” – The history of electronic music in Cyprus

Electronic music takes center stage in the events at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre with “1984-NOW,” a retrospective of its history in Cyprus. The Festival honors the pioneers of electronic music and envisions its evolution and future through five showcases, each curated by leading representatives of the local scene: ABR, Sousami, Alex Tomb, Barking Cats Radio, and Honest Electronics. Participating artists include Evagoras Karayioryis, Menelaos Tomasides, Manic Mike, as well as rising voices such as Kasska and La Rod’s.

What to expect

This year’s program includes a series of outdoor performances in Nicosia Municipal Garden, celebrating the sounds that shaped the festival. Many artists return to ABR, while new voices and collaborations explore fresh sonic paths, including:

• The South Africans BCUC return triumphantly — winners of the 2023 WOMEX Artist Award and one of the most explosive bands on the global scene (20/06/2025).
• The Cypriots Spherical Cow, with their unique, unpredictable musical language (20/06/2025).
• Zelzeleh, with their digital Sufi sound (20/06/2025).
• Brass Rave Unit, bringing the ecstatic, chaotic energy of Amsterdam (21/06/2025).
• Nama Dama, with electronic folk infused with the traditions of Ukraine, Greece, Cyprus, and Pontus (20/06/2025).
• Tatadana, an African diaspora band based in Cyprus, with rumba and salsa rhythms (21/06/2025).
• Rumba Attack, with rhythmic, melodic temperament (21/06/2025).

Фестиваль AfroBanana, который на протяжении десятилетия занимал важное место в культурной жизни Кипра, меняется, развивается, переименовывается в Alternative Brains Rule Festival (ABR) и переносится в самое сердце Никосии. Основным местом проведения мероприятий в этом году станет Муниципальный театр Никосии, который примет фестиваль 19, 20 и 21 июня 2025 года.

ABR — это не просто фестиваль. Он переосмысливает город как живую культурную платформу и приглашает публику на дни и ночи, наполненные музыкой, искусством и совместными поисками.

Common Ground: Там, где искусство создает связи

ABR включает в себя художественную программу, состоящую из интерактивных мастер-классов и творческих инсталляций в Муниципальном саду Никосии, меняя восприятие окружающего мира. В этом году в программе:
